Installing XP on Dell Vostro 1400
Misc January 10th, 2008->
I spent 2 days trying to install XP SP2 on laptop Dell Vostro 1400, which i normally took about 15 mins. The reason why was i kept getting the same status as below…
Setup did not find any hard disk installed in your computer. Make sure any hard disk drives are powered on and properly connected. And any disk related configuration is correct.ect. Press F3 to quit.
.. later i found the solution from internet…
Reboot your system and hit F2 as soon as you see the Dell startup screen (the options are F2 for setup, F12 for boot sequence).
In the System Setup screen, do these steps.
Select Drives:
Make sure your Diskette Drive (3.5 floppy) is set properly (Usually set to Internal)
Make sure that “Drive 0: SATA-0″ drive is set to “ON”
Go to “SATA Operation”:
Your system probably came set to “RAID Autodetect / AHCI” - THIS SETTING CAUSES YOUR SYSTEM TO GO INTO AN IDE LOOP AND DOESN’T ALLOW IT TO FIND YOUR FACTORY INSTALLED SATA DRIVE.
CHANGE THE SATA OPERATION SETTING TO “COMBINATION”
Reboot - make sure that the boot sequence is set to CD rom before HD and make sure that the reinstall CD is in the drive. Setup will load, hit enter to reinstall XP. Your HD should now be detected and you should see the licensing agreement.
If you have your files backed up I recommend deleting the partition and reformatting prior to installing XP, it will give you that option after the license agreement.
Once you have successfully reinstalled the OS, Dell recommends that you change the SATA Operation setting back to RAID AUTODETECT / AHCI (or back to whatever your factory setting was) to avoid any problems with other IDE devices installed on your system.
.. and finally able to install XP on the system…

Hi Kingpinz,
I manage to install XP successfully, but after i changed the BIOS setting for SATA Operations back to AHCI, i get blue screen error when XP boots up. Perhaps i have not done it correctly?

oh.. i didnt encounter this before. probably you have to revert back to SATA settings and leave it as it is.

Hi
The post is really great. But what about the various drivers which need to be installed once the XP process is done. Drivers as in Blutooth, Wireless, Graphics etc etc

the drivers normally shipped with the pc. or you can use various drivers detector out there such as Driver Detective from drivershq.com

hi!!
Please help me..
i have spent a lot of time trying to install xp on my system.
i tried the slipstreaming of drivers onto an xp installation disk, tried changing the bios settings, looked into tons of websites to overcome this, but everytime the installation CD loads i get the “dreaded blue screen”.
Initially i used to get the message which says” no hard disks detected”.
But now i don not get that message too.
For any of the settings of SATA operation i get the “blue screen”
Also i did not find any Drive 0 or diskette settings on my BIOS.
Am i missing any info here??
Please do help me!
i Have got sick of Vista and i really need to install XP.
Thnx in advance
